What All Things A New Mom Should Take Care Of?
Newborn Care From Head To Toe
Follow these simple tips recommended by doctors, for keeping your baby clean and comfy.
Face
It is disconcerting seeing a newborn with a blotchy, red face, but acne on babies is harmless and common.
Care tip: Wash the baby’s face on a daily basis with mild fragrance-free baby soap.
Eyes
Some babies have a crusting or yellowish discharge in their eyes or on the eyelid, which usually is caused by a blocked tear duct. This condition may last for several months.
Care tip: Wipe that area using a moistened cotton ball with lukewarm water.
Scalp
Many babies may develop a cradle cap which is a scaly scalp condition. This condition typically disappears within the first few months.
Care tip: Wash the baby’s hair with any gentle baby shampoo, but not more than two or three times a week. Gently brush out their scales daily with a soft toothbrush or baby hairbrush.
Nose
The narrow nasal passages of the baby tend to fill with mucus.
Care tip: Gently unclog their nostrils with an infant-sized nasal bulb syringe. To loosen mucus, you can insert saline solution along with an eyedropper before suctioning.
Nails
The nails of a newborn are usually soft, but the nails can scratch their sensitive skin.
Care tip: Use blunt-nosed scissors or baby nail clippers. Clip after the baby’s bath because nails are soft, or when he/she is sleeping and the fingers are relaxed.
Skin
Some babies may develop red and itchy patches called atopic dermatitis or eczema or which is an inheritable skin condition.
Care tip: Limit bathing to 10 minutes, and use a fragrance-free, mild soap and lukewarm water; try applying hypoallergenic skin cream after the bath. Stick to cotton clothing.
Bottom
Too much moisture and sensitive skin may lead to diaper rash on many babies.
Care tip: Frequently change diapers. Rinse the baby’s bottom with lukewarm water during each change and dry. Avoid the use of wipes; they can irritate the skin. Creams, such as white zinc oxide or petroleum jelly, may help.
Umbilical Cord
Always make sure that the umbilical cord stump is clean and dry; it is likely to shrivel and fall off in a few weeks.
Care tip: Avoid covering the umbilical cord area with the diaper and it’s better to stick to sponge baths until the cord stump detaches.
Circumcision
The tip of the baby boy’s penis will be swollen, and a yellow scab will appear.
Care tip: Clean the genital area gently with warm water on a daily basis. Also, use any petroleum jelly to protect the area and avoid the penis from sticking to the diaper.
Legs
The legs of a newborn are bowed out and their feet are turned in, which is nothing surprising, given the baby’s previous cramped living quarters.
Care tip: Do not worry about it, the baby’s feet and legs will straighten somewhere from six to 18 months.
Feet
The toes of a newborn are frequently overlapped and the nails look ingrown but they aren’t.
Care tip: Do not sweat it, this appearance is absolutely normal.
